A Floating Night Table
THE ESSENTIALS WITHIN REACH
Furniture, Spring 2016

The design begins with the question of what we need next to our bed. Cell phone, glasses, headphones, earrings, a cup of coffee, a book, etc. Those things tend to fall into three categories, something to be vertically stored, something on a horizontal surface and something to be hidden. Thus, the essential elements are defined accordingly as a shelf, a table top and a drawer.

[Composition Possibilities]

The final form has a delusional effect to be detached from the floor, therefore it is made floating. Given that standard wood construction in US uses 16” on center stud, the installation of the product needs to follow this convention. Similarly, the dimensions of each element take consideration to size of standard magazine, iPhone, iPad mini, coffee cup, etc.

[Rehearsal with Drawings]

The fabrication method is tested and refined with plywood and basswood. And the final product is fabricated from raw ash, donated by Ronald McDonald House Charities for fundraising auction.
